With Eagles’ WR out, they activated player off IR, elevate player from practice squad to face Rams

Even though the Eagles will be without wide receiver DeVonta Smith on Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, because of his hamstring injury, the team has a few options on the roster who could see more action. They chose to activate a player off injured reserve who could have an impact in two phases of the game.
The Eagles activated wide receiver Britain Covey off injured reserve and elevated tight end C.J. Uzomah Saturday. Covey has been sidelined since fracturing his scapula in the Eagles’ Week 3 win against the New Orleans Saints—an injury that came at a time when he was starting to see more action in the passing game. Covey’s practice window opened Wednesday, and he was listed as questionable on Friday’s injury report, up now has no injury designation. However, the Eagles felt comfortable enough to put him on the field. They also did not need to make any corresponding moves to activate Covey after placing defensive end Bryce Huff on injured reserve.

Covey has caught all seven of his targets this season for 34 yards, with two of those catches converting into first downs. Before his injury, Covey served as the team’s primary punt returner, recording one return for nine yards. He could find himself playing in the slot, with A.J. Brown and Jahan Dotson taking most of the wide receiver snaps on the outside. Covey’s ability to navigate tight spaces and find running lanes could make him a viable option on wide receiver screens. His knack for locating soft spots in zone defenses, throttling down, and catching the ball is another asset.
Uzomah was elevated for last Thursday’s win against the Washington Commanders, playing three offensive snaps in the Eagles’ three-tight-end packages during short-yardage situations. For Uzomah, the opportunity to contribute in a meaningful game was welcome.
“It felt great, and it was amazing to be back on the field with the boys,” Uzomah told NJ Advance Media. “It’s the best, to be honest—there’s nothing better. Getting a W also makes it the best. Just being out there with the guys and being able to contribute a little bit, even though it was only a few plays, was a lot of fun.”
